Week at a Glance June 4

 June 4

Library

On Monday we had the chance to learn about the Summer Reading Challenge put on by the Calgary Public library. Please see the link below for more information.

Rhyming  Words

We reviewed what rhyming words are this week. Rhyming words are words that have the same or similar ending sounds. The children were asked to generate their own rhyming words when asked what rhymes 'with _____?' Ask your child what rhymes with cat or sun this weekend!

Living /Non-Living

The children explored and learned about what types of objects are living and what is non-living. They learned that living things need the following: nutrients, can grow, can breathe, be able to move, and reproduce. Ask your child if they can name a living and a non-living object.

Weather

With the hot weather this week, it was a perfect time to discuss what types of clothing we could wear in the different seasons. The children were asked to pick their two favourite seasons and draw themselves dressed for that season. They were then asked to describe what clothing they had drawn.

Every Child Matters

One of our focusses this week has been talking about how every child matters.  We will continue to talk about this for the rest of the year.

We would like to share what we have talked about with you in case you would like to continue the conversation with your child at home.

-Indigenous People were the original caretakers of the land that we now call Canada

-we reviewed the Acknowledgement of the Land that has been created by the Calgary Public Library. We talked about how we live in Treaty 7 and that we are in Blackfoot Territory

-We read a book called Good Night Families by Adam Gamble and talked about who matters in your family and why we all matter

-we read the book When We Were Alone by David A Robertson.  In this book a Grandmother tells her granddaughter about her time in a Residential School.  In the book she explains that all children had to have their hair cut, that everyone needed to dress the same, they were not allowed to speak their language and they were not able to see their families

-after listening to the book the children talked with their table groups and then we talked in a Sharing Circle as a group
